As a poetic license, “Last Day of Sun” means the eternal darkness, total destruction, and the end of mankind. For astronomy, though, the last day of the sun will be a reality in some billion years when our private star will have finally reached its final grasp of hydrogen and will have swalled a great part of our solar system. To be more precise, our Sun will reach Mars orbit or more. In fact, by that time there will be not even a sign of mankind in this sad and lonely and pathetic little world. Our civilization will be long gone or to the conquest of other planets or, simply, will have destroyed ourselves – that’s the most probable the way I see it.
Total darkness is one of Metal music most valued belief. The end of our civilization and, therefore, the end of mankind are also beloved themes in our Metal music idiosyncrasy. That’s what Fuming Mouth were looking for when the band chose this tittle for their comeback album after uncertainty and dire circumstances due to a devastating diagnosis of leukemia in late 2021, vocalist/guitarist Mark Whelan spent nearly a year battling cancer through chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, and emerged in remission in 2022. Now cancer free, the beloved frontman returns rejuvenated with renewed determination, perspective and creativity in a new lease on life and the band’s most crucial and frecocious record yet.
Musicwise, “Last Day of Sun” goes beyond some genre expectations. I’ll elaborate. Fuming Mouth are labeled as Death Metal band, however, I can’t say this is a pure Death Metal album as the band added many other influences to it; most notably, some Modern Metal features as in “I’ll Find You.” There are also Doom Metal influences as in album opener “Out of Time,” which by the way made me belive I would be reviewing a Doom Metal album. Apparently, I was wrong. But hold your horses, don’t go judging me yet. After hearing a little more from the album, I found “Disgusterlude” whose sound is pure Doom Metal serving as a bridge to the fast paced Death Metal drenched “Kill the Disease,” which is the song with more Death Metal sonancies in the album. Album tittle “Last Day of Sun” is also full of Doom Metal sonancies. So, it’s really possible to say that “Last Day of Sun” is what some people are calling genre bender, that is in a simple way, an album that goes beyond its genre.
Fuming Mouth “Last Day of Sun” is an interesting comeback album that’s for sure.
“Last Day of Sun” was released on November 03rd via Nuclear Blast Records.

I’m just a lucky guy who has chosen metal to live with for a long time. Metal changed my life for good. It made me more confident and stronger. Metalheads are naturally far away from the mass mediocrity and don’t accept impostures from anybody else. Metal is more than music, it’s a life changing oportunity!
