Hellmann – Born, Suffering, Death Review

Every now and then, there comes a band to remind us the importance of Hardcore to Extreme Metal and, of course, to Metal music. Besides all the fuzz between both genres, and the rivalry some experimented in the good old times, many Metal artists admit to have a crush on Hardcore and Punk Rock. The most obvious example is the NWOBHM scene which used many Punk Rock and Hardcore elements. However, it’s the role on the making of Extreme Metal that Hardcore played the most essencial part.

Hellmann with “Born, Suffering, Death” is a great example of all the influence Hardcore had on Metal music as the mix the band does is a burning hot cauldron of Metal and Punk elements. Truth be told that this mix sometimes sounds as Motörhead. Being fair with the band I guess it would be impossible not to. Some bands did a so remarkable job in helping to define their genres that they are the instant image that pops up in our minds. That would be true while listening to “Desktop Activist” with its guitars that remind the Phil Campbel and Würzel era. But, it’s the bass of “Unnecesary Consuming” that gives all the hints making things a lot clear of where it comes from. Other songs, as album welcomer “The 4th Power” and “A Waste of Human Being” are a hodgepodge of Extreme Metal influences plus many others as post-punk. Listening to the “The Cycle” makes it impossible not to notice the band’s reckon to Hardcore. If the fan takes it out from the album and listens to it alone the impression it gets is that it is a Hardcore band we’re talking about. The same happens to “Bringer of Death,” this one with a little more Metal elements.

“Born, Suffering, Death” is the kind of album that exists to remind us how Hardcore was important to Metal music. It’s interesting how the melodic leads break all the aggressive instrumentals giving the songs that outstanding contrast I always tell about. An album for fans of the good old mix of Hardcore with Extreme Metal.

Hellmann “Born, Suffering, Death” will be released on January 26th.
