METALLICA frontman James Hetfield has honored Lemmy Kilmister by getting a tattoo featuring the ashes of the late MOTÖRHEAD frontman.

Revealed on METALLICA‘s Instagram page on Tuesday night (April 16), Hetfield shared that he chose the Iron Cross and Spade design frequently associated with Lemmy, tattooing it onto the middle finger of his right hand. This gesture ensures that the legendary MOTÖRHEAD rocker “is still able to fly the bird at the world.”

“With the steady hand of friend and tattoo artist @coreymillertattoo, this tattoo,” Hetfield wrote.

“A salute to my friend and inspiration Mr. Lemmy Kilmister. Without him, there would be NO METALLICA.

“Black ink mixed with a pinch of his cremation ashes that were so graciously given to me.

“So now, he is still able to fly the bird at the world.”

Lemmy passed away on 28 December 2015, four days after his 70th birthday, from prostate cancer, cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure. According to the band, his cancer had only been diagnosed two days prior to his death.
