Martikor – Acedia Review

It’s so good to be right! Some reviews ago I said that this year of 2024 was full of amazing Doom Metal releases and I was right. Here we’ve got another great band with an amazing album. Martikor with “Acedia” exceed the expectations delivering the fan an Epic Death Doom Metal. Interesting fact is that “Acedia” has no signs of the musical expertise we are used with Death Metal. On the contrary, the album is as primal as it can be tonal chords that give that extra power doom metallers are accustomed to. The long tracks showcase a band that carefully chooses their chords and their respective sonic effects to give the fan that epic feeling the band desires to pass. There are some touches of acoustic instruments and some classical music wrappings to give the album a more sophisticated spirit as in “Coiled,” but the outcome is to make the album even more primal.

“Acedia” is an album that deals with the fan’s most primal instincts. Musicwise, Martikor‘s choice for tonal chords gives the album a very energetic feeling that overwhelms the fan with emotions. Let’s say there is an overwhelming sequence of primal emotions the fan has to deal with. Some moments call the eye as the ungodly screams vocalist Lenn gives. They give the fan the chills, believe me. I guess the main concept idea Martikor wish to give the fan is of rebel spirits who don’t accept their situation. Those spirits pass their message by haunting the living. “A Tremor in Infinity” is exactly this. It’s touching the despair the songs passes the fan. There is no way not to be touched by the despair this poor soul exhales.

My feeling is that “Acedia” is a Doom Metal album with other influences from Post-Metal and others. I say that because the cadence is so shoegazed and the feelings the music pass are so primal as only Doom Metal knows how to deal with. Maybe “Born Among Thorns” is the track that represents this idea better as its cadence is purely doomy with some Black Metal guitar techniques. This album, as I said before, is strong in emotions. Not for the weak at heart.

Martikor “Acedia” will be released on April 12th.
