Mr. Myst – 7 Deadly Sins Review

A lot things come to my mind when I think of the seven deadly sins. No, not one of them is the Netflix anime – It was the first to pop up when I searched for it at Google. I’m not that cool. Truth is I don’t care for animes. Should I? Nah, pass. I’m an old grumpy guy so, the first thing besides Metal music is the Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman movie “7.” Pride, covetousness, lust, anger, gluttonyenvy, and sloth are very well showed there in the form of a serial killer. It’s true that Metal music has covered them pretty well for the last five decades in so many ways in its iconography. Maybe it’s one of the most covered themes Metal bands have used for the last five decades.

Here we’ve got Mr. Myst with their version of the “7 Deadly Sins” which makes a great effort to take us back to the golden age of Metal music. This is very comprehensible as Mr. Myst were founded in 2013 by guitarist Atticus Myst who is also known for his energetic live shows with the 80’s heavy metal band Ostrogoth between 2017 and 2019. With his solo project Mr. Myst, he played over 100 shows mainly in the Benelux but also in Germany and France. Supporting bands like Eclipse, Crazy Lixx, John Corabi, Marco Mendoza. Their studio album “We Will Rise” was released end 2019 following their debut demo “Mr. Myst” in 2016 and their 2018’s EP “Red Light District.” In 2023 they released their anger and frustrations into their 3rd album “7 Deadly Sins.”

With the acoustic and gothic intro “Spiritus Sancte” the fan is driven to think of a heavier album than actually “7 Deadly Sins” is. Following track “Ghosts” and its instrumentals give the same impression with its Dio “Holy Diver” era grip. Vocals, though, sound lighter than expected. This would have been an easy explanation of Mr. Myst’s approach on Metal music; a band with hard as rock instrumentals with lighter vocals if the album hadn’t taken a plot twist from tittle track “7 Deadly Sins” where it acquires a Hard Rock instrumentals. Hard’n’Heavy would be a better view on the album as the fan goes on the listening. Ironically, one of the top moments of the album is the cover of Michael Sembello’s “Maniac” from the Flashdance movie soundtrack. Mr. Myst give it the power it was lacking.

Maybe on purpose, maybe not, but Mr. Myst go on a very different road Ostrogoth do. Of course, this isn’t really a problem. Just saying it.

Mr. Myst “7 Deadly Sins” was independently released on November 03rd.
