Olymp – S/T Review

Maybe it’s just me. Maybe just because I love this kind of music. Or maybe it’s just a sound I’ve been connected for a long time in my life and now it’s part of it. I mean, part of my memory. Or maybe it’s just the long time I’ve been off. The thing is that I cherry picked Olymp and their self-tittled to review after this week hiatus because I knew I would love it. It’s the so called comfort zone. Damn, this is a term that I truly like to avoid due to the implications it leads. Well, whatever.

“Olymp” welcomes the fan with the ironmaidish “Hades” whose main riff goes right to a very well-known Iron Maiden classic. Pay no attention to the initial choir and go right to the music. By the way, to say that Iron Maiden is an influence is redundant. The guitars are very aligned to Iron Maiden’s sonancy. The same can’t be said about vocals which follows a harsher school of performing. It’s also redundant to say “Olymp” is heavyly influenced by the NWOBHM, however, here and there almost hidden there are some modern traits. “Fire and Fury” has those hidden traits. Maybe the overtones. I just loved its moody intro and I wish it had continued for some more time as this track is the longest of the album with more than six minutes. Following track “Metal Priest,” though, is pure NWOBHM. It’s interesting how Olymp deal with a raw sound intertwined with a more produced and polished one. The album shows this feature of the band. This also may happen when there is a hiatus amongst the recording of the songs

“Olymp” was an album I heard lots of times because I was in a kind of recess. It wasn’t a writer’s block at all. But the words weren’t going easy. It happens all the time. That, of course, doesn’t mean anything about the quality of the album which I guarantee it’s great.

Olymp “S/T” was released on October 13th.
