Svartanatt – Last Days on Earth Review

We’ve been receiving some poetic album tittles these days. By its cover, I suppose “Last Days on Earth” tells about the disaster we’re facing right now due to climate changes. This is what everybody is talking these days and it couldn’t be different, the anihilation is knocking at our door.  Ironically, this is the most updated thing about the album because the sound here is so influenced by the Heavy and Psychedelic Rock of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. In fact, Svartanatt showcase many influences from bands as Mountain to Deep Purple. By the keyboards, I have to say there is some Iron Butterfly as well in some tracks.

Musicwise, interestingly “Last Days on Earth” brings two songs that could be on any movies of that time. The impression it gets is by the trumpetes in last, but not least track, “Where I Belong” could be in any Sergio Leone spaghetti western. “The Crows,” could also be in the soundtrack of any movie of that time by the same reasons. Only by those two songs, it’s possible to say Svartanatt really got the spirit of the time, which, by the way, isn’t an easy thing to do. One has got to research a lot because it’s not only the instruments, but also the way of writing songs. The band did it here with flying colors. It’s such a pristine job done here.

As their late 1960’s and early 1970’s peers “Last Days on Earth” is a very varied album covering lots of sonancies of that time. Album opener “Demons in the Night,” for instance, uses lots of clean guitars with open chords, a thing many bands used to do back then. Of course, the chorus is very catchy and without noticing the fan is already singing along. Following track “Mad Stranger” follows the same vibe except with a faster beat. A highlight to the sound of the keyboards and to Alvin Lee’s inspired leads.

“Last Days on Earth” is an album for the fans interested in Heavy and Psychedelic Rock of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Svartanatt did a pretty amazing job here emulating the sonancy of that epoch. Everything sounds pristine from head to toe.
