Tegmentum – Evolvement Review

It’s true that the world is getting much more complex than it was expected. It got so complex that this complexity mirrors in the music bands are doing today. It’s so true that I bet bands as Tegmentum wouldn’t be possible twenty years ago. The mix they do here wouldn’t be impossible in the 1980’s, for instance. I say that just because Extreme Metal wasn’t the real good example of complex music, on the contrary, as I said many times, its image was of poor production and poor musicians. It’s also true that this reality has been gone for a really big time. “Evolvement” is here to prove it.

“Evolvement” goes deeper into the mix of Technical with Progressive Death Metal up to a limit, as listening to album intro “Innocuous,” I almost thought I would review a band with strong Yes influences. Well, maybe I’m not that wrong. If memory serves me right, its initial moments were very near “Soon” from “Relayer” era. The thing is that Tegmentum go further in their mix adding more palatable – let’s use this term – features to a non Death Metal fan as Yvette Young’s special guesting in “Accolades” that gives the song a sweet female pop voice to contrast with all the bloodbath the band does. This kind of melt isn’t that common as bands prefer operatic singers in general.

In general, what my dear child of the night will find here is a well-balanced mix of Technical Death Metal with some – a lot – Progressive Death Metal slants. The album is well-balanced because Tegmentum were careful enough not to write songs that are more Progressive Death Metal in contrast with others that are exclusively technical Death Metal. Both main influences are present in almost all songs. Of course, there are tracks as “Genetic Assimilation” with a lot more of rage and wrath being almost brutal. I said almost.

A great album for death metallers and the likes.
