Unmothered – Corridors Review

“Corridors” is an album that challenges the fan all the way around because there are lots of plots that go moving here and there. I’d say the album is in movement as it doesn’t stop in a comfortable place. On the other hand, change is the word that applies better to what my dear child of the night will find here. There is a movement gallore in here because Unmothered think each track as a story and each one finds another way to be told. So, to some extent, each track is a chapter of the book called “Corridors,” whose tittle doesn’t let this theory sound that out of bounds.

Alright, it’s true that the tracks’ names don’t fit at all with idea of being part of a book. I mean, there’s no link among them all not if we push a little the boundaries. However, musicwise Unmothered built a Death Metal foundation which is used to unite all the tracks into a common ground. But just that. From where I’m standing the only features that can put as Death Metal is the vocals, which it’s true, links all the tracks. There are lots of different features here in the album and most of them certainly don’t belong to Metal standards as we know it. “Barrens,” for instance, have some Post Punk features that are the electronic effects the band introduced here and there. Interestinly, each time I listen to the album I find a different feature. On the other hand, “Last Limbs” has a something of Led Zeppelin in the air. The intro of grand finale “Apsis” has that Space Rock ethereal sounds that was very common in the 1970’s with some doomy elements to make it harsher and with some kind of spooky feeling.

About what I said about the album, guitarist and vocalist Matt Walker comments:

“This is an album about catharsis and the personal corridors we traverse in the halls of our minds. It’s about the inevitability of change and its constant influence in our lives. It involves many writers and composers of music I’ve been fortunate enough to know and collaborate with for a long time. Spanning nearly 10 years back I’m excited to finally have this album finished. It’s been a long road.”

Just about what I said, isn’t it?

Unmothered “Corridors” will be released on December 08th.
