Veilburner – Lurkers in the Capsule of Skull Review

Veilburner Lurkers in the Capsule of Skull The way I see it it took the longer I expected to bands incorporate dissonances into Metal music. Dissonances and Metal music do fit since the dawn of age of times. Modern classic music composers have incorporated them a while ago. Jazz players as well. Well, it’s a fact that Metal music is much younger. We have to give that. Little by little Metal bands are incorporating this and other effects that help criating a stronger atmosphere of musical chaos. That’s what we see here with Veilburner “Lurkers in the Capsule of Skull,” an album that little by little go incorporating dissonances and some free jazzing stuff. There are moments as in “Para-Opaque” that the band acquires a Prog Rock grip with some background effects that help creating a smooth chaos – if there is such thing.

Veilburner were very clever in adding little by little the aforementioned techniques in their music and to write ‘standard’ tracks mixed with some dissonances. This gives the fan where to hold on and to get used to the music. We all know that Extreme metallers hold on to some traditions and that they are hard to forget. Well, from where I’m standing these kind of ‘standard’ tracks are the ones that glue the album with the new ones. Everything changes, but in the right and precise time. I guess the tracks that represent better what Veilburner can do is “Vault of Haunting Dissolve” and “Dissonance in Bloom” with all the dissonant chords and also the vibrato effect. The songs acomodate all the dissonances the band desire to deliver. “Vault of Haunting Dissolve” has more dissonance elements than “Dissonance in Bloom” which has some moments of a real butchery a fats drumming with the dissonant guitar. The effect gets really nice.

The fan will soon notice that Veilburner “Lurkers in the Capsule of Skull” has that something different. The album has that sort of thing that makes it very interesting and at the same time groundbreaker. From “In the Tomb of Dreaming Limbo” with a background soprano vocals that is so background that some fans my not notice it to “Dissonance in Bloom” the album does its best to subvert some musical rules of Metal music. Veilburner add some chords that aren’t real popular with Metal musicians to give them their personality. The outcome is a blast and at the same it’s a contribution to the technical evolution of our beloved genre.
