Folterkammer – Weibermacht Review

I’ll begin this review of Folterkammer “Weibermacht” talking about the guitar lead of “Herrin der Schwerter.” I know guitar leads aren’t such a novelty around Metal music world, but a guitar lead with a clean guitar mimicking the spirit of surf music is really something to open the eyes. Regarding to this track only “Weibermacht” is by far one of the most wicked albums I put my hands this year. The voices here are really something out of this world. I mean it. Besides all that, vocalist Andromeda Anarchia doesn’t have only an operatic voice, her way of putting her voice is so dissimilar from her peers because she really uses her operatic abilities besides giving them a wicked spirit. Also the instrumental wrapping Folterkammer deliver give their sound a dark atmosphere. Tracks as “Algolagnia” bring such a cacophony that is hard to find these days.

From where I’m standing, operatic voices purely are something wicked to me. The eerie vocals of “Leck Mich!” also contribute to raise some hell plus the church organ sound. The band’s Black Metal is really something very, but very top notch. It’s really hard to a band to bring all the lyricism of Classical music giving them such an eeire spirit as Folterkammer did here. The way the band makes their vocal duels in “Die Unterwerfung” is really something impressive. By the way, it’s vocalist Andromeda Anarchia who does both. There is such an uncanny atmosphere in the album that is so difficult to tell. well, Black Metal is supposed to be uncanny, if you know what I’m saying. But it’s not only the vocals that make the band such an interesting feature, it’s also the dissonances brought “Küss mir die Füsse!” and its weird cadence. The speed shifts in the song add some layers of inconstancies that are mandatory in Black Metal today. Of course, that doesn’t mean Folterkammer are a seagull from the flock. They aren’t. Pay close attention to Andromeda Anarchia’s high pitches in the end of the song. Fantastic!

An album to believe there is something wicked going on with Black Metal and Classical music. “Weibermacht” is the perfect blend of both plus all the wicked and eerie atmospheres both genres deliver.

P.S.: Pay attention the cover of Velvet’s Underground’s “Venus In Furs.” Unbeatable!
