Speed Limit – The Broken Record Chorus Sound Tapes Review

There are bands whose histories are longer than their career and albums released. Last year we had the honor of review two Speed Limit’s releases the full-length “Cut a Long Story Short” and the EP “Hit the Wall,” with a new song and two alive recordings. The band’s history goes very far in the year of 1979 until their first split in 1994.  Speed Limit are the greatest example of a would-be band, the band that raised lots of attention, but achieved very little success. Now they are back.

Alright, this “The Broken Record Chorus Sound Tapes” is supposed to have been their sophomore album back in 1990 when they recorded it. However, for unknown – at least unknown for me – reasons the album was lost – or hidden – for this appreciable amount of time. Well, it’s easy to realize the album has the sonancy of the late 1980’s and early 1990. I believe it would be a hit back then. Now, in 2024, for all the reasons I’ve been telling my fans here, I believe the album sounds fresh. It’s no news many bands are recovering this kind of music. Fun fact is that many tracks address a lot to Loudness, an influence I didn’t notice while listening to the other releases. No wonder as Loudness had their best time in the same epoch. Much of this impression is due to vocalist Joe Eder, I have to say. His tone of voice addresses a lot to Minoro Nihara. Take a look at “Telling a Tale” to get what I’m saying. I also felt some Saxon here with the roughness of the guitars. The album also contains the cover versions of Michael Jackson’s Beat It (?) – not bad considering – and Huey Smith’s Don’t HaHa.

Well, I wish more luck to the band in their new enterprise. It’s the least I can do.
